What I’ve Been Up To (with PICTURES!)

Hey friends!

This blog is still on hiatus (officially), but I wanted to check in with you and share some exciting things in my personal life. With pictures. I know, I know, it’s like a miracle.

I took these pictures myself, on my grainy, cheap camera phone. Which partially explains why I don’t often do these.

Anyway, the biggest cause of all the busyness lately, giving rise to hiatuses and things like that, is I bought a house!

Carolyn-in-the-Living-Room

This is my living room. That’s my housemate/good friend/cousin/ministry partner, Carolyn, sitting on the floor. We don’t have furniture yet.

It’s a huge house, and as you can see it’s all walled and ceilinged with oak and pine, and there are two enormous fireplaces. So it’s like living in a gargantuan cabin. We really like it.

It’s astonishing how much time it takes to buy a house. And then once you buy it, to move stuff into it, and clean it, and change all your billing addresses, and all of that.

In the midst of this process, I’ve been meaning to show you something cool:

USB-Promo-Photo

Argh, so grainy! I’m sorry. One day I’ll be wealthy enough to buy a phone with a real camera.

Back in the summer I was contacted by a company called USB Memory Direct, which creates and sells custom USB drives. They were looking for “well known authors to work with,” so, you know, that kind of flattery will get you everywhere ;). Actually, they wanted to send me some USB drives with my logo and website on them (my URL is on the back) that I could give out at signings and events.

Jeff, who I talked with at the company, thought it would be a great idea to give out digital books this way. I think it’s a SUPER cool idea. Authors and bloggers, take note. I’m really impressed with the drives and am thinking up creative ways to use them. Again, here’s their website if you want to check them out.

I also wanted to show you my new office. At least in good weather. Here it is:

Lake-Erie-Office

It turns out there’s a beautiful Lake Erie beach a 20-minute walk from our house, and at this time of year it’s pretty much deserted. We intend to buy ourselves little beach chairs and start doing as much of our office work as possible while seated on the beach. Oh yeah.

Finally, because I’m imagining protests if I don’t post any selfies and frankly, I am not taking a selfie of myself at the moment, here’s me two weeks ago getting ready to pelt 3300 feet down the side of a mountain on a zipline with my good friend Susanne Lakin of LiveWriteThrive:

Rachel-Ziplining

Things are actually calming down a teensy bit, and I’m done traveling for a while, so I’m looking forward to getting this blog back into gear. In the meantime, I’m hoping to comb through some of my published essay collections and pick out some good pieces to share with you. Thanks for coming along for the journey–may you enjoy the gift that is life today!

Dear Rachel, I just found you last month, but with family moved in with me, doctors and other things, I have only read the first book you sent me–but I will catch up somehow–maybe when the cold and snow comes here to Kentucky. I do want to say that I love your writing, your closeness to God came through to my heart, and He is everything to me. Know you are very busy, but I know that you are a blessing from God to me and so many others. Thank you, Barbara Thomas
