Rachel,

As always, well thought out and well spoken. I had a harder time with RL. I wonder if rereading the other books would make a big difference - as I couldn't recall everything. Some items seemed familiar, but I didn't remember the reference.

They are very interesting settings, and I look forward to the end of the series, even if this wasn't my favorite one.

And yup, "short" is an economic thing. I don't really see attention spans ever shrinking so much that we won't want to lose ourselves in a good story. These days, escape is more attractive than ever ;).

Elisabeth, "magic" isn't really a concept gone into in the books. Auralia's artwork has power, but it's a power that's beyond her. Some of the characters are born with abilities we would call "magical" (like shaping stone or talking to animals) though the books present them more as unusual talents.

I think "short" is for economic reasons. J.K. Rowling showed that even those in the computer generation can read long books and stand in line for more.

This sounds like an amazing book. I'm getting very interested in this series! Question: Do the characters use "good magic" (like Gandalf the good wizard, the magic used by Eragon and his friends, etc)?
The publishing industry demands that books be relatively short?!?!! I guess the attention span of readers has diminished (curse you, TV!)
